Between 15:00 and 18:00 add 30 to 50 percent on the strip zones; at night the strip is faster and the unlit road past Cosón is not. Rate list updated August 2026. ## Wheels down to curb: 25 to 45 minutes AZS is an open-air terminal and it is faster to walk than most airports its size, but immigration is the bottleneck and it is entirely a function of how many aircraft landed in the same twenty minutes. A quiet morning arrival can be at the curb in 25 minutes. A 4pm bank of flights from the US Northeast and Canada can take 45, occasionally more in high season. Baggage runs in parallel and is rarely the constraint. Customs is a walk-through unless you are flagged. So when you are planning dinner reservations or a check-in cutoff, use landing time plus 35 minutes plus the drive time for your zone, and you will be right more often than not. ## The short zones: Samaná town, the Village, Playa Bonita Samaná town and the Sánchez are both 10 to 15 minutes, and the variable is the gate, not the road. Samaná town is a controlled community: the car stops at the guard post, the driver gives the property and guest name, and the barrier lifts. That is a two-minute routine when the reservation name matches and a fifteen-minute one when it does not, which is why we ask for the name on the booking. Playa Bonita is 15 to 20 minutes on the same road before the Las Terrenas turn. Nothing about these runs is hard; the whole trip is usually shorter than the immigration queue you just cleared. ## The strip: Las Terrenas and Portillo Las Terrenas is 20 to 30 minutes. The spread comes from where on the strip you are — Playa Rincón and Cosón sit at the near end, the big Palace and Riu complexes further along — and from resort gate traffic at the 3pm check-in peak, when a line of arrival vehicles can back up in a driveway. Portillo adds five to ten minutes past the Las Terrenas border. It is priced as its own zone at $60 because it genuinely is further, which is the single most common surprise for guests who booked a Bahia Principe Grand El Portilloor Bahia Principe property believing it was Las Terrenas. ## The long runs: Cosón, El Limón and beyond Cosón is 30 to 40 minutes. El Limón is 45 to 60, and the second half is the part that matters: past Cosón the road narrows, lighting disappears for long stretches, and the resort entrance roads are unlit private drives that can run a kilometre or more from the highway to the lobby. On a wet night this is slower, and no honest operator quotes 45 minutes for a 1am arrival in the rain. Nagua is 60 to 75 minutes and Santiago 60 to 80, both west on the highway. Santo Domingo, city or SDQ airport, is 2.5 to 3 hours and should be planned as a half-day. ## Departure buffers we use, by zone For the ride back to AZS we schedule pickup on a buffer measured from your scheduled departure, not from the drive time. It is operator advice, not an airline rule, and it is built from watching the check-in queues: 2.5 hours before wheels-up from Samaná town and the Village, 3 hours from Las Terrenas and Portillo, 3.5 hours from El Limón. The extra half hour on El Limón is the road, not caution. The extra time on all of them is AZS departures, which is a busy, warm terminal where a US-bound morning bank can put 200 people in front of you at a single airline counter. If your flight is the first out at 7am, we will tell you plainly that a 3:30am pickup from El Limón is what the buffer implies, and we will still do it. If you are on an afternoon departure, the buffer is comfortable rather than brutal. ## Traffic bands: normal, check-in peak, night The same drive is not the same length at every hour, so the table below gives three bands for all fourteen drop-off zones rather than one optimistic figure. Normal traffic is a weekday morning or a quiet evening. Peak is 15:00 to 18:00, when the resort check-in wave, the staff shift change on the Las Terrenas strip and Sunday afternoon returns all land on the same two-lane road. Night is roughly 22:00 to 05:00. Peak costs you 30 to 50 percent on the local zones — Las Terrenas goes from 20–30 minutes to 30–45, Portillo to 35–50, Cosón to 40–55. It is the strip itself and the resort driveways, not the airport road, which is why a Samaná town run barely moves. Night is faster on paper and slower in practice past Cosón. The road is empty, so Las Terrenas tightens to 20–25 minutes, but the unlit stretch to El Limón is driven at a sensible speed rather than a fast one: plan 50 to 65 minutes, more in rain. Long runs to Nagua, Santiago, Samaná and Santo Domingo barely change at night; they are highway, not strip. Weekends follow the same shape with one addition. Saturday is the biggest arrival and departure day of the week at AZS, so both the terminal and the strip run at peak-band times for most of the afternoon, and Sunday evening adds local traffic returning from the beach at Cosón and El Limón. None of this changes your price.
