Getting to Los Haitises: Hotel Pickup, Boat Connections and the Return Trip

BlogAZS Airport Transfer

For a Los Haitises excursion, book the road journey to the meeting point on your boat confirmation—not simply to “the national park”. Agree on hotel pickup, boat check-in and the return before travelling. Road transport, the boat tour and park access are separate items unless your written booking explicitly combines them.

Identify the right departure point first

Los Haitises is visited by boat from Samaná; Caño Hondo near Sabana de la Mar is another access area. These are not interchangeable pickup addresses. If your booking names Samaná town, request the actual office or pier there. If it names Sabana de la Mar or Caño Hondo, send that exact destination for route confirmation. A general park map pin does not identify where your boat leaves.

Work backward from check-in and your hotel entrance

Send your accommodation address, not just a beach name. Las Terrenas, Portillo, Bonita and Cosón are different pickup locations; Las Galeras and remote villas need their own route planning. Give dispatch the operator’s reporting time, which may precede sailing. Ask for a confirmed road estimate and pickup time with contingency. An AZS-to-hotel drive time is not a hotel-to-pier journey time.

Treat an airport-to-boat connection as a separate plan

Scheduled landing is not the time you leave AZS arrivals. Allow for immigration, baggage, customs and the road journey before boat check-in. Have both providers assess whether the connection is realistic; do not assume a same-day excursion will wait for you. If the flight is delayed or rebooked, contact the boat operator as well as dispatch. Keep a fallback plan if the sailing cannot be reached.

Check boarding, children and luggage

Before confirming, ask the excursion operator about the actual boarding steps, walking surfaces, assistance and any age or mobility restrictions. A suitable road vehicle does not guarantee accessible boat boarding. Request child seats for the car separately from suitable lifejackets on the boat. Confirm where suitcases can be kept; do not assume the driver or boat can store them. Carry essentials in a manageable bag protected from spray.

Agree on the return before you board

Confirm the return pier, expected disembarkation and how to report a change. A driver waiting throughout the excursion and a separately scheduled collection are different arrangements. Ask whether waiting is included and how additional time is agreed. Weather-related changes may affect the boat and the road booking differently. Save contacts offline. If you fly later that day, confirm the whole return connection before paying for the excursion.

Request a quote for the actual itinerary

For a private-driver day trip, send the hotel, date, exact departure address, passenger count, children, luggage and return plan. The published airport-transfer fares do not automatically price a hotel-to-pier excursion. Ask which road legs, waiting, stops and changes are included, and check boat tickets, guides and park access separately. Request the required road transfer and obtain written availability and price before relying on it.

Questions we get on this

Does the airport-transfer price include the boat tour?
Do not assume so. Confirm the road journey, boat tour and park access as separate inclusions unless the written booking expressly combines them.
How long before sailing should we leave the hotel?
Use the operator’s check-in deadline and the confirmed hotel-to-departure-point route, with contingency agreed with dispatch. There is no single departure time for the whole peninsula.
Can we visit straight after arriving at AZS?
Only if both providers confirm a workable connection and a fallback for delays. Flight tracking for the car does not mean the boat waits.
